Logbook #10: The Quest for a Dungeon

Dear Logbook,

I've been pondering many things lately, but most important to this post I'm writing, is the love for classic dungeoneering. There's something that really gets me pumped up about the concept of delving into a loot and monster ridden dungeon to claim glory and fame. I grew up playing games like Torchlight, a real classic top down dungeon crawler. Those types of games will always hold a special place in my heart and in my design philosophy.

The closest I've ever got to a real satisfying Dungeon Crawling Experience^TM is Gloomhaven and maybe TTRPGs. Some honorable mentions that are still pretty cool, but definitely don't take the cake are: Clank!, One Deck Dungeon, and various Minecraft RPG mods. Gloomhaven is THE dungeon crawler. It's a glorious game to behold. I would play it every weekend if I had the time. It really captures the essence of dungeon crawling well, but nothing else. It's purely combat, no traps or puzzles. I think this is where a TTRPG would shine. I DM my games, I don't play them, so I really don't know what it's like to see an empty dungeon map and start exploring. I think it would be fun though, and I look forward to the day when I can be the idiot adventurer.

Bringing this Logbook around, I want to make a dungeon game. Not necessarily now, but sometime in my life. It's like THE game I would make. Roadtrip Apocalypse is set up as an episodic TV show and sadly doesn't have much room for dungeons. So I'll have to make another game. Honestly, I have so many games I've never finished, just ideas and art sitting there, ripe for the taking. If I ever end up selling physical copies of one of my games, I'll scan in some of my old notebooks and you folks can really see the magic.

Farewell Travelers! Best luck and good fortune!
